Lunchtime Brainwaves

BrainWaves Show Graphic Brainwaves is eclectic alternative radio – two hours of great music every week spanning five decades of rock and roll. You’ll hear everything from the pop 70s, all the way to the latest melodic indie, with a healthy dose of punk, progressive, new wave, dream pop, synth pop, slowcore, country folk, electronica, art rock, and grunge thrown into the mix. And, since Brainwaves broadcasts from Jerusalem, you’ll hear some cool Israeli rock as well. Brainwaves has the widest mix of music you’ll hear in one show on the Internet.

Brainwaves got its start as a new wave program on Oberlin college station WOBC in 1980. After a 28-year break, Internet radio enabled the show to return and it’s been going strong ever since. Brainwaves airs on Nusakan Radio on Friday nights at 9 pm UK time.

About Brian Blum

Brian has wanted to be a DJ ever since he was 7-years-old growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area and his parents bought him a cassette tape recorder. He began talking over the songs he heard on the radio in his best 1970s Top 40 Boss Jock voice. In high school, he was the “voice” of the Pledge of Allegiance, heard every day at noon. It wasn’t until college in 1980 that his dream was fully realized and Brainwaves was born.

Brian planned a career in radio and even took a course in studio engineering. Then in 1984, he moved on a whim to Israel where he fell in love with the country (and a nice woman) while simultaneously discovering there was no work for a young man who didn’t speak the language – unless he wanted to work at the fabled Voice of Peace pirate station docked “somewhere in the Mediterranean.”

In the meantime, he built a career as a freelance journalist and editor and today his writing can be found all over the Internet, including at The Jerusalem Post, Israel21c, the AIM Group, and on his blog This Normal Life, which has appeared weekly since 2002. Brian lives with his wife and three children in Jerusalem.
